Mission Statement

The Octavia-Smithville Rural Fire Association, also known as the Octavia Volunteer Fire Department, the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department and the Octavia-Smithville Fire and Rescue will strive to provide protection of life and property of our citizens through progressive fire prevention and fire suppression activities. All members will demonstrate a responsible and upstanding attitude to reflect a good moral image. Continuing education, training, learning and evaluation of practices and procedures will continue to be essential elements of this department.

GROUND BROKEN FOR FIRE DEPT. BUILDING IN ZAFRA

The Octavia Volunteer Fire Department has recently purchased 1/2 acre of property in Zafra for the purpose of constructing a building to house the fire truck that has been at one of our fire fighter's homes for the past several months.  Clearing the property has been done, a pad built up, and arrangements to have a building constructed are being made.

NEW REPEATER UP AND RUNNING

As of Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, we have a new narrow band repeater up and running complete with a new talk frequency.  All radios have had to be reprogrammed to refleet the narrow band status and change to the new frequency.    The changeover to narrow band MUST be completed by Dec. 31, 2012, so we are ahead of the game on this.  We couldn't be happier with the improvement this has made in our communications.  We are reaching areas previously impossible to reach and, with few exceptions, transmissions are crisp and clear no matter where in the area one of our fire fighters are located.  This will make a vast improvement in our ability to react to and communicate during the assorted crisis situations that come our way.

ADDITIONAL RESCUE TRUCK PURCHASED

In March of 2009. the Fire Department acquired a new rescue vehicle.   It was purchased with tax money made available through the one-quarter percent sales tax increase voted in by McCurtain County residents in 2007.  The new rescue unit is a 2007 Dodge 2500 1-ton diesel with four-wheel drive,  has been equipped with a Mertz "slide-in" fire apparatus unit, and is being housed at the Smithville station.   This makes it almost a duplicate of the 1999 Dodge 2500 at the Octavia Station.

Come visit us and see why we are so proud of the new additions to our Fire Association.

NEW PUMPER TRUCK ARRIVES

On Feb. 4, 2008, our new rolling pumper truck (see px. this page) arrived at the Smithville station where it is being housed.  It was custom built for the Octavia/Smithville Rural Fire Association by Rowe Industries of Hope, AR.  Carroll & Tim Rowe and their crew an outstanding job on this "Big Rig".
The truck  is equipped with a remote control nozzle on the front bumper giving us spray and roll capabilities, a front winch, 750 gal. water capacity, an I-Com F121  50 Watt radio, and many more items too numerous to mention.       See:  Drill Session

NEW FIRE DEPARTMENT ASSOCIATION

In November, 2007, we officially have two fire departments - The Octavia Volunteer Fire Department and the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department.  These two fire departments make up the OCTAVIA-SMITHVILLE RURAL FIRE ASSOCIATION, which serves as the "umbrella" organization for the two departments.  Membership does NOT change as the membership is in the OCTAVIA-SMITHVILLE RURAL FIRE ASSOCIATION regardless of where you live.

The OCTAVIA-SMITHVILLE RURAL FIRE ASSOCIATION  maintains TWO stations, and continues to revitalize its organization.

OTHER EQUIPMENT AND UPDATES

Our equipment now includes a  Dodge 1-ton truck dubbed Rescue 1, the 2007 Dodge 1-ton ,  now Rescue 2, and an older model Chevrolet truck, complete with slide-in emergency unit already installed, which has been renamed Rescue 3.  Rescue 3  will be put to use as backup to the other two rescue units.

A new bed complete with storage boxes, and places for much needed supplies and equipment was  installed  on Rescue 1.    A donation from Plum Creek made this addition possible.  The slide-in unit, which has already  been in operation on Recsue 1, is now installed on the new bed.    This  has proven to be a piece of valuable and much-needed equipment.    The slide in unit for Rescue 2 was installed April 2, 2009 and was put into service at a trailer fire that night.

ANTENNA UPDATED

Another valuable update was finished on Sept. 6, 2006.   The cable from the transmitter to the antenna was old and in very bad shape.  In addition to several spliced sections, there was a hole right through the cable at one point. This has been replaced and we believe our radio transmissions have greatly improved.

Even though in recent months we've been experiencing some static interference problems, we believe that we've found the cause of the problem.  A couple of technicians from Choctaw Electric were here Tuesday morning and determined that the problem is in defective grounding of some of the poles around the fire station.  Apparently, if a lightning strike is sustained, it melts the sand around the ground turning it into glass and rendering it no longer functionable.  Steps are being taken to rectify this situation.

Here are some pictures of the wire job.     (PX. #1)       (Px. #2)       (Px. #3)         EMT's were standing by.

GRANT CHECK RECEIVED

AND - on July 19, 2008, at the Annual Fish Fry, Plum Creek generously presented a grant check in the amount of  $2,300.00, to be used to further equip our new truck, and add some much needed additional equipment:  chain saw, generator, portable tank, and assorted fire-fighting tools.  The check was presented to Chief Steve Prise by Plum Creek Regional Forsester Phillip Speer.  Click to see PX.
